Every family has one relationship where cheek is not merely tolerated but expected, and in most Indian families it is this one. A sali can say things to her jiju that nobody else in the house would risk — and he is required, by long tradition, to take it well.

So a jiju's birthday message is the rare one that can open with a joke and still count as affection. Thirty below: the funny ones first, because that is what the day is for, then the warm ones for when you actually mean it.

Funny — the ones only a sali can send

  • Happy birthday to the man who married into this family and has been quietly regretting the paperwork ever since.

Why the jokes work here and nowhere else

The sali–jiju bond is one of the few in an Indian family that is openly permitted to be irreverent. It exists precisely because so many of the others cannot be — you cannot tease your father-in-law, and you probably would not tease your bhabhi in front of your mother. The teasing has somewhere to go, and it goes here.

That is a licence with an edge to it, though. The jokes work because they are affectionate underneath, and the ones that land always leave the compliment visible. "You are still on probation" is funny because everyone knows he passed years ago.

If the marriage is new

Skip the teasing for the first year or two. He is still working out who in this family he can relax around, and a joke about probation reads very differently from someone he met eighteen months ago than from someone he has known a decade.

Use a warm line, use his name, and let the friendship arrive at its own pace. There will be plenty of birthdays to be rude on later.

If you are writing to your bhabhi instead — your brother's wife rather than your sister's husband — those are on the birthday wishes for bhabhi page.

Something he will not have been sent already

A jiju gets the standard treatment on his birthday: a forwarded image, a group-chat pile-on, and roughly nothing that took anybody five minutes. A small game with his name in it is a much better joke than any line on this page — a pirate's spyglass to find your message, or balloons to pop for it. An album of him with your sister works too, and is the version that gets shown to people.

Free, five minutes, no app for him to install: make one for him.
