For most of the year a bhabhi is addressed by her position. She is bhabhi to you, bahu to your parents, someone's wife at every function she attends. The role gets used so often that the name underneath it can go weeks without being said out loud.

Her birthday is the one day that can be about the person rather than the position — which is why the wishes that land name something she did, not something she is. Thirty-five below, including short ones for a reply, formal ones for a bhabhi ji you are still finding your footing with, and a few in Hindi.

For your bhabhi

  • Happy birthday, bhabhi. Today is about you and not about anybody you are related to.

  • Happy birthday to the person who made this family easier to be part of.

  • Happy birthday, bhabhi. You have been kinder to me than I have ever been to my own brother.

  • The house got warmer when you arrived, and it has stayed that way. Happy birthday.

  • Happy birthday, bhabhi. Hope today is entirely on your terms, for once.

  • You keep track of everyone's everything. Today somebody is keeping track of you. Happy birthday.

  • Happy birthday to my bhabhi, who is somehow always the calmest person in the room.

  • Happy birthday, bhabhi. Whatever you were planning to cook today — don't.

Heart touching

  • Happy birthday, bhabhi. You came into a family that was already full and made room in it anyway.

  • I did not know I was getting a sister. Happy birthday to the one I got.

  • Happy birthday, bhabhi. Thank you for holding this family together on the days none of us noticed you were doing it.

  • You have never once made me feel like an outsider in my own home. Happy birthday.

  • Happy birthday to my bhabhi — the person this family stopped being able to imagine itself without.

  • Some people join a family. You became one. Happy birthday, bhabhi.

Funny, if you are close enough

  • Happy birthday, bhabhi. You married into this. Nobody made you. Remember that on the hard days.

  • Happy birthday to the bhabhi who knows more of my secrets than my brother does, and has used none of them.

  • Happy birthday, bhabhi. You are legally family now, so the gift is compulsory and the jokes are permanent.

  • Between us we could end this family in one group call. Happy birthday to my co-conspirator.

  • Happy birthday, bhabhi — genuinely the best thing my brother has ever organised.

  • Happy birthday. You have put up with him for years, which makes you the strongest person here.

Short, for a WhatsApp reply

  • Happy birthday, bhabhi. So glad you are ours.

  • Happy birthday — this house is better with you in it.

  • Wishing you a lovely birthday and a completely unhurried day.

  • Happy birthday, bhabhi. Thank you, always.

  • Family by marriage, sister in practice. Happy birthday.

  • Happy birthday, bhabhi. Take the whole day.

For bhabhi ji, when it is still formal

  • Happy birthday, bhabhi ji. Wishing you a year that treats you as well as you treat everyone else.

  • Happy birthday, bhabhi ji. Thank you for the warmth you have shown me since the day I met you.

  • Wishing you a very happy birthday, bhabhi ji, and a year of good health and easy days.

  • Happy birthday, bhabhi ji. This family is fortunate to have you in it.

  • Many happy returns, bhabhi ji. I hope today is spent exactly as you would choose.

Use her name at least once

This is the single change that separates a message she keeps from one she scrolls past. She will receive a dozen that open "Happy birthday bhabhi" — the same four words her whole extended family sends. One that opens with her actual name reads as a message from a person rather than from a relative.

Then add one specific thing. Not that she is caring or hard-working, which is what everyone writes, but the particular instance: the day she covered for you, the thing she cooked when you were ill, the argument she quietly ended. Specific is unarguable, and it is also the part that proves you were paying attention.

If you are the devar or the nanad

The two of you occupy an odd position: close enough to tease, junior enough that a misjudged joke lands badly in front of the elders. The safest register on a birthday is warm rather than funny, unless the friendship is genuinely established — and if it is, you already know which lines you can send.

Writing to her for Raksha Bandhan instead? That is a different message with a different history, and it lives on the Raksha Bandhan wishes for bhabhi page. If she is your nanad rather than your bhabhi, the wishes for a nanad are written from the other side.

Something better than a forwarded graphic

By late morning she will have received several identical cake images with her name pasted on. What she will not have received is an album of the years since she joined this family, a photograph to a page with a line under each — or, if she would rather laugh than well up, a balloon to pop for every year and a stack of boxes with your message at the bottom.

Free, about five minutes, and it opens in her browser with nothing to install: make one for her.
