What a bua's message can say that others cannot

The useful thing about this relationship is the shared history. Your bua knew your father as a boy, which means she is the only person who can tell you what he was actually like — and a message that reaches for that lands harder than one about how caring she is.

So name something only the two of you have. A story she told you about him. A time she took your side. The thing she lets you do that your parents do not. Any of those is unarguable, and none of them could have been sent to anybody else.

Writing the other way round

A bua writing to her bhatija or bhatiji is writing to her brother's child, which is the nearest thing to seeing her own childhood again from the outside. The lines above lean into that rather than pretending to be a second parent — the point of a bua is that she is not one.
