Writing to a nanad is not the same job as writing to a bhabhi, and the difference is the order you arrived in. She was already here. You are the one who came into a house with its own jokes, its own arguments and its own way of doing things — and she is the person who either made that easy or did not.

So the message that lands is rarely a grand one. It is the one that admits she was here first and thanks her for making room anyway. Thirty to copy, including the ones for a lumba and a few in Hindi.

For your nanad

  • Happy Raksha Bandhan, nanad. You were here first, and you still made room.

  • I arrived as a stranger and you decided otherwise inside a week. Happy Rakhi.

  • Happy Raksha Bandhan to the one who explained this family to me before I had to ask.

  • You could have let me get it wrong. You told me instead. Happy Rakhi, nanad.

  • Happy Raksha Bandhan. I married into this house and got a sister I was not expecting.

  • Thank you for turning his family into ours. Happy Rakhi, nanad.

  • Happy Raksha Bandhan to my nanad, who has never once made me feel like a guest here.

  • Happy Rakhi, nanad. Every family should come with someone like you already in it.

If she ties you a lumba

  • Thank you for the lumba, nanad — and for counting me in without being asked to.

  • Happy Raksha Bandhan. The thread on my bangle says the part I struggle to.

  • One for him and one for me, every year. That has never stopped meaning something.

  • Happy Raksha Bandhan, nanad. Same family, same promise, same thread.

  • A lumba is a small thing that says a large one. Thank you, and happy Rakhi.

  • Happy Rakhi, nanad — for the thread, and for everything that came before it.

Short, for a reply on the day

  • Happy Raksha Bandhan, nanad. So glad you are mine too.

  • Happy Rakhi — this family is easier because you are in it.

  • Wishing you a lovely Raksha Bandhan and a very unhurried day.

  • Happy Raksha Bandhan, nanad. Thank you, always.

  • Happy Raksha Bandhan to the first person here who felt like family.

  • Happy Rakhi, nanad. Same house, same side.

Funny, if you are close enough

  • Happy Rakhi, nanad. You warned me about him and I married him anyway. That one is on me.

  • Happy Raksha Bandhan to my nanad, who knows exactly which stories to raise at dinner.

  • Between us we have enough on this family to negotiate anything. Happy Rakhi.

  • Happy Rakhi, nanad — the only person here who agrees with me about him.

  • Happy Raksha Bandhan. You got a bhabhi and I got a full briefing. Fair trade.

  • Happy Rakhi to the nanad who ties the thread and keeps the receipts.

What a lumba actually is

In many Rajasthani, Marwari and Gujarati families the sister does not tie one rakhi but two: the rakhi on her brother's wrist, and a lumba on his wife's bangle. The reasoning is old and quite generous — the household is a pair, so the thread that binds one of them binds both.

It is worth knowing which way round it goes before you write, because it is easy to get backwards. The nanad ties the lumba; the bhabhi receives it. If she has tied you one, the natural message is thanks rather than a wish for protection.

Plenty of families do not observe it at all, and nothing is missing if yours does not. Follow what already happens between you rather than introducing a ritual because a page suggested it.

Say the specific thing, not the sentimental one

The lines that work name something she actually did: sat with you the first time you got a name wrong, took your side in front of her own mother, told you which arguments were worth having. Those are unarguable. A general declaration about sisterhood is not, and she will have received nine of them already.

This also solves the problem of a relationship that is still finding its shape. A specific thank-you is true at any distance. A grand statement is only true at one.

If it is still formal between you

Some nanad–bhabhi relationships are close from the first week, some take years, and some stay cordial for good. None of those is a failure, and a Raksha Bandhan message does not have to pretend otherwise.

Send the shortest warm line here and make no demand of her. It opens a door without requiring her to walk through it on a particular Tuesday, which is the most a message can honestly do.

For the other side of this relationship, there are separate wishes for your bhabhi. If you would rather write in Hindi throughout, start with Raksha Bandhan wishes in Hindi, and the 2026 date and muhurat page has the timing.

Something she has not already been forwarded

A nanad tends to receive the same festival image everyone else receives, usually twice. The thing she will not have had is a photo album of the years since you joined the family, with a line under each picture — the wedding, the first Diwali, the ordinary afternoon nobody photographed on purpose.
