Raksha Bandhan 2026: Date, Muhurat, Rituals & Gift Ideas

A group of people dressed in traditional Indian attire

Raksha Bandhan 2026 falls on Friday, 28 August 2026, on Shravana Purnima — the full moon of the month of Shravan.

The rakhi is tied during the day's muhurat, and this year that window is 5:57 AM to 9:50 AM on the New Delhi panchang. Everything below is the rest of what people are actually asking when they search the date: why the window closes when it does, what the rituals are, and what to do if you're in another city on the day.

Raksha Bandhan 2026 date and time

  • Date — Friday, 28 August 2026
  • Rakhi muhurat — 5:57 AM to 9:50 AM
  • Purnima tithi begins — 27 August, 9:10 AM
  • Purnima tithi ends — 28 August, 9:50 AM

Two things worth knowing about those times. They're calculated for New Delhi, and sunrise moves across a country this wide — Kolkata runs earlier and Mumbai or Ahmedabad later, typically by ten to twenty-five minutes. If you want it exact, check a panchang set to your own city.

And the window closes when it does because the muhurat can't outlast the tithi: once Purnima ends, so does the day for tying a rakhi.

Is there Bhadra this year?

This is the part that changes most years and the reason the muhurat is sometimes an odd afternoon slot.

Bhadra is a period considered inauspicious for tying the rakhi, and when it overlaps the morning, families wait it out. Bhadra falls on 27 August and is over well before sunrise on the 28th, so there is no Bhadra to work around this year — the whole morning window is clear.

So there's no afternoon alternative to plan around this year — the morning window is the whole of it.

What Raksha Bandhan actually marks

The literal translation is "the bond of protection", and the traditional framing is a sister tying a thread on her brother's wrist and him promising to look after her. In practice most families have quietly updated it: the promise runs both ways, and plenty of people tie a rakhi for a cousin, a bhabhi, a friend who became family, or a sibling who has spent far more time protecting them than the other way round.

The festival is also one of the few fixed points in the year that exists purely to make siblings pay attention to each other — which is most of why it survives.

A practical plan for the morning

If your family observes the muhurat, decide the night before who is bringing the rakhi, sweets and gift. The small things are what make a morning window feel rushed: finding a diya, calling someone who is still asleep, or discovering that the rakhi is in a courier bag downstairs.

Keep the ritual and the catch-up separate. Tie the rakhi during the window, take the photograph, exchange the sweet and then let the long conversation happen afterwards. It means nobody is watching the clock while they are trying to be present.

If your family does not follow a muhurat

Many families treat Raksha Bandhan as a family morning rather than a timed ritual. In that case, early is still kinder than exact: it gives the person receiving your message or call a quiet moment before the family group fills up and the day becomes visits, food and photographs.

The date and the sentiment matter more than borrowing a timing rule that is not part of your home. There is no need to make the festival feel like an exam.

The rituals, in order

  • The thali is prepared — rakhi, roli or kumkum, rice, a diya, and something sweet
  • Aarti — the sister performs it, and applies a tilak to her brother's forehead
  • The rakhi is tied on his right wrist, inside the muhurat
  • Sweets are exchanged — usually she feeds him first
  • The gift is given, and in most families this is the loudest part of the day
  • Elders are touched for blessings, if they're in the house

If you can't be there on the day

Most siblings in India now live in different cities, and a courier that says "delivery in 2–4 days" is no use on a festival with a four-hour window.

The version that works: post the physical rakhi early, then send something on the morning itself that arrives instantly. A gift link opens in their browser during the muhurat, wherever they are — see long-distance Raksha Bandhan ideas for how people are doing it.

Wishes, quotes and captions

For the message itself: wishes for your brother, wishes for your sister, wishes in Hindi, quotes, and captions for WhatsApp and Instagram.

Writing to a cousin or a bhabhi instead? There are separate sets for cousins and bhabhi and nanad.
