What makes the difference between a good one and a forgettable one

The photographs people choose are almost always too good. The polished ones are already on their phone and they have seen them. The airport one, the one where it rained, the one where somebody is mid-sentence and looks ridiculous — those are the ones that do something, because they are the ones nobody bothered to post.

The captions people write are almost always too poetic. "We had known each other nine days here" is worth more than any sentence about forever, because it is a fact only the two of you have. Write what was true then, not what sounds good now.

And the letter should be shorter than you think. Four hundred characters is not a constraint to work around; it is the reason it reads like you rather than like a card.
